  1. Hi,
Is Mal 3:10 a command to the church? What and how much is “the whole tithe” as this is not defined in the passage of Mal 3? The verse also seems to suggest that the tithe is food.

  2. Hi Linda,
The subject we were on was tithing but in your response you mentioned firstfruits as something I should meditate on. Please note that firstfruits and tithes are not equivalent and they do not equate to the same thing. Note also that whilst the first of the firstfruits (the best of the first fruits) were given to the priests, the tithes were given to the Levites. The Levites then gave a tithe of the tithes to the priest. So if you gave the Levites 10 sheep out of 100 only one would go to the house of God, i.e., the priests. So that tithe to the priest is now not 1/10 but 1/100.

You asked if God’s storehouse isn’t the church and I think this is where the central problem lies. What we have done today is to attempt to import the Levitical priesthood and system and try to replicate it in the church. Note though that what was done under the old priesthood has been changed by Jesus Christ so that we do not now need to try and attempt to follow that system (See Heb 7:12). The church building today cannot be equated to God’s house (the tabernacle in ancient Israel) as we the people who are in Christ constitutes the church and it is our bodies that now constitute the temple of God and not a physical building (1 Cor 3:19, 2 Cor 6:16). Moreover all believers in Christ are all priests (1 Pet 2:9). To attempt to go back to the old priesthood and tabernacle system therefore is to deny the work of Jesus Christ on the cross which changed all that. Today we do not need to observe tithing, firstfruits, heave offering, burnt offering, waive offering, wood offering, sin offering, trespass offering etc etc. Today we are called to give according to what we purpose in our hearts, not out of compulsion or out of necessity but with a cheerful heart (2 Cor 9:7).

Ps: A tithe was every tenth not 10% So if you had 19 sheep you would tithe 1 not ten percent. God bless.
